Port Authority Bus Rapid Transit Proposal

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Port Authority of Allegheny County will host a series of meetings in the Mon Valley communities that will be affected by the Bus Rapid Transit proposal.

Residents and riders — especially riders of the 61A, 61B, and 61C — are invited to learn more about the BRT proposal and provide input on how the Authority can best adjust service in their communities to complement BRT. Those attending will learn more about the proposed changes and have an opportunity to provide feedback on initial service ideas.

The Downtown-Uptown-Oakland-East End BRT project will link nearly 40,000 people across 24 neighborhoods via rapid, frequent, and reliable transit service; revitalize communities by improving existing infrastructure; and bring new housing, businesses, and jobs to areas along the three-mile route.

Some pieces of the project continue to be addressed, including considerations for transfers and fare policy, and the impact on the Authority’s non-BRT service. These meetings will begin to address these items.

In June, the BRT project received approval from the U.S. Department of Transportation to enter into the Project Development phase, a critical step in the process that allowed the completion of environmental analyses and begin engineering.

The Urban Redevelopment Authority of the City of Pittsburgh, on behalf of Allegheny County, the City of Pittsburgh, and Port Authority, submitted the first part of the application to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Small Starts program in early September. The application requested Small Starts funding for half of the $195.5 million cost. If included in the president’s FY2019 budget, it is estimated that construction would begin by mid-2019, with the system put into service by 2021.
